CRIWMP — Climate Resilient Water Management

Overview

The Climate Resilient Integrated Water Management Project, known as CRIWMP, is a public-sector programme in Sri Lanka focused on water and climate resilience in the country's dry zones. Its work includes rehabilitating village irrigation systems, improving access to safe drinking water, strengthening disaster preparedness and supporting climate-smart agriculture among smallholder farmers. We built its institutional website, which serves a mixed audience of rural communities, officials, contractors and partner organisations.

The Challenge

A programme like this has to communicate with very different readers. Farming communities want to know what is happening near them, in a language they read. Suppliers need to find procurement notices and contract awards. Partners and stakeholders look for reports, photographs and evidence of progress. All of this must be published by a programme team rather than by web developers, and the material grows continually as activities progress, so the structure has to accommodate new content without becoming disorganised.

Our Approach

We designed the information architecture first. The content falls into natural groups: what the programme is, what it does, what it is buying, what it has published, and how to reach its offices. Each became a top-level section with sub-pages, so a reader can reach any topic within a couple of clicks. We chose WordPress because the programme team can add publications, tenders and photos by themselves, and because it handles multilingual document libraries and large media collections well.

What We Built

The About section explains what the project is, its task, its focus and where it works. The Activities section has a page for each programme area: village irrigation rehabilitation, drinking water, climate-smart agriculture, disaster management, environmental safeguards, and the monitoring and evaluation framework. An Information section carries procurement and tender notices together with contract awards. The Media section holds publications, blogs, audio-visual material and photo galleries, with publications available in Sinhala, Tamil and English. A Contact section lists the head office, sub office and district offices.

Technology

WordPress provides the publishing workflow, media library and role-based editing that a public programme needs, and lets staff with different responsibilities work on different sections. We use structured content types for tenders and publications so they can be listed, sorted and updated consistently instead of being loose pages.

Outcome

The programme has one public home for its story, its procurement notices and its evidence of progress. Communities and stakeholders can find what is being done and where, suppliers can follow tenders and awards, and the team can keep the site current as the programme moves forward.
