Overview
Pizza Villa is a family-run restaurant in DeKalb, Illinois, a local tradition since 1956. Its customers are neighborhood regulars, students, families and groups planning gatherings. We built the restaurant's website and online ordering experience so that guests can order for pickup or delivery without a phone call, while the restaurant keeps the dine-in and banquet business that made its name.
Our Approach
We treated the site as an extension of the counter rather than a separate product. We chose Laravel with MySQL because ordering involves structured data that must stay consistent, and JavaScript on the front end to make the order flow responsive without forcing customers through a heavy application. Integration with the restaurant's existing operations was a design constraint from the start, so the site adapts to how the kitchen already works.
The Challenge
A long-established restaurant has habits and a loyal audience, and a new ordering site must not disrupt either. Customers who have phoned in the same order for years need a path that feels just as easy. At the same time, the site has to serve people who have never visited and want to check the menu and hours first. Add pickup, delivery, banquet enquiries and staff hiring to the mix and the risk is a cluttered page that helps nobody. The challenge was to keep ordering prominent while giving every other audience a clear place to go.
What We Built
The site presents the online ordering portal for pickup and delivery as the main action, next to the phone number for people who prefer to call. Around it sit the pages a restaurant visitor expects: a to-go menu, a virtual tour and gallery of the dining room, prebake instructions for guests taking pizzas home to finish, information on the private reservation and banquet room, delivery details, a contact page and an employment application.
Technology
Laravel provides a dependable back end for menus, orders and forms, with validation and security built in, which is important whenever customers submit personal details. MySQL stores this data in a relational structure that suits items, options and orders. JavaScript handles the interactive parts of the front end, such as building an order, without turning the site into a single-page app that would be harder for a small business to maintain.
Outcome
Pizza Villa now has a website that works as a real sales channel. Customers can order for pickup or delivery online, find the menu and hours quickly, look around the dining room virtually, and ask about the banquet room, while staff and job seekers have their own routes. The restaurant keeps its phone ordering and its personal character, and gains a digital option that fits alongside them and can be extended with new menu items, announcements and offers as the business changes.
