Overview
FAQQUA Perfumes sells fragrances online, and the store we built for them is designed to feel closer to a boutique counter than a generic web shop. It is an e-commerce storefront on WordPress and WooCommerce, aimed at shoppers who browse for a scent by mood, occasion or recommendation rather than by exact product name.
The Challenge
Perfume is an awkward product to sell on a screen. Customers cannot smell it, so the page has to persuade through presentation, structure and trust. A large catalogue makes this harder: shoppers who land on a long grid of bottles tend to leave unless someone has already done the sorting. FAQQUA needed a store that looked premium, kept a big range approachable and let a returning customer find a specific fragrance quickly.
Who Shops and How
A gift buyer is often the most uncertain shopper: they know the recipient and the budget, not the fragrance, so curated collections give them a place to start. A loyal customer returns for a specific bottle and uses search straight away. Behind the counter, a store manager adds products, arranges collections, updates stock and processes and dispatches orders, while a marketing person changes which items are featured without asking a developer.
Our Approach
We started from the brand rather than the platform. The product is luxurious and moody, so we chose a dark interface with gold accents and let photography carry the page. Navigation follows how people actually shop for scent: by curated group first, by search second and by the full catalogue last. WooCommerce was the practical choice for the commerce layer, since it provides a familiar product, stock and order back office and lets us spend effort on the storefront experience instead of rebuilding shop basics.
What We Built
The heart of the store is a set of curated collections. Best Women, Best Men and New Arrivals give visitors an immediate starting point, and each reads as an editorial shelf rather than a filter result. Product cards stay clean so the bottle is the focus, and the gold accent colour is reserved for actions and highlights so it keeps its meaning. Search is the second pillar: a customer who already knows what they want can reach it without scrolling, using a fast product search built with custom JavaScript on top of the WooCommerce catalogue.
Architecture and Data
Each fragrance is a WooCommerce product with attributes that can describe it, such as concentration, size and intended audience, and collections are groupings over those products, so a new bottle can appear in several shelves without being duplicated. Search queries the catalogue as the shopper types, returning matching names quickly and avoiding page reloads that would break the flow. Orders, stock and customer accounts remain in WooCommerce.
Security, Privacy and Quality
Payment data should never touch the shop's own database, so checkout relies on a payment gateway that processes card details. The store holds customer names, addresses and order history, which calls for HTTPS, timely updates to WooCommerce and plugins and restricted admin roles. We tested search with partial names and misspellings, verified that images keep consistent proportions and checked the checkout flow on phones.
Technology
WordPress with WooCommerce suits a catalogue-led store where the owner needs control of products, pricing and content. We used a custom theme layer instead of a stock template so the dark, gold-accented design is consistent, and JavaScript for the interactive parts, mainly search and collection browsing.
Outcome
FAQQUA Perfumes has a storefront that presents its range with the polish the product deserves. Shoppers can begin with a curated collection or go straight to search, and the team can keep the catalogue and collections current on their own, with room to add further collections as the range grows.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to build a perfume or luxury e-commerce store?
Cost depends on the size of the catalogue, how much of the design is bespoke, the search and filtering features, payment and shipping setup and product photography. A branded custom theme takes longer than a template but gives the store a distinct identity. We can give a clear figure after reviewing your range.
How do you sell fragrance online when customers cannot smell it?
Sell through presentation and guidance: strong imagery, clear descriptions of scent character, curated collections, and reassurance such as reviews or sample options. Helping shoppers narrow choices matters as much as the description of each bottle.
Is WooCommerce good enough for a large product catalogue?
Yes, with good hosting, careful use of plugins and efficient search, WooCommerce can handle large catalogues. Performance depends on the setup as much as on the platform.
