Luminous Creates β€” Creative Agency Platform

Portfolio and capabilities website for a creative storytelling studio, with a capability grid and a dark editorial look.

Overview

Luminous Creates is a creative studio focused on storytelling through video and design. We designed and built its website as a portfolio and capabilities showcase for brands and organisations looking for a studio to tell their story. The site is both the studio's shop window and its first meeting with a prospective client.

The Challenge

A creative studio's website is a piece of work in itself, and prospects judge the studio by it. It needs to show finished projects convincingly, explain what the studio does without slipping into agency clichΓ©, and stay quick even though video and design files are heavy assets. It also had to make the range of services legible at a glance, so a marketing manager with limited time can tell within moments whether the studio covers what they need.

Who Visits and What They Do

A brand manager or founder arrives from a referral or a search, typically wanting to see recent work first and read second. A producer or agency partner may look for evidence of a specific skill, such as motion graphics or brand identity, before recommending the studio. Inside the studio, a creative lead or producer uploads finished projects, writes short descriptions, chooses which pieces appear prominently and answers enquiries, and none of that should require a developer.

Our Approach

We structured the site around the studio's capabilities. Instead of a long list of services, we planned a capability grid in which each tile represents one thing the studio does and leads into relevant work. The visual language is dark and editorial, which flatters footage and imagery and gives the studio a distinct personality. We kept copy spare and let the projects carry the argument, since a prospect should be persuaded by the work rather than by adjectives.

What We Built

The site includes a homepage with the capability grid, project showcase sections built for video and design work, pages describing the studio and how it works, and an enquiry route. Layouts adapt to phones without losing their character, and the dark theme keeps contrast high for text over imagery.

Architecture and Data

Projects are treated as structured content: a title, a description, the capabilities they demonstrate, cover media and the related video or gallery. Tagging a project with capabilities is what connects it to the grid tiles, so publishing a new piece automatically makes it discoverable from the right place. Heavy media is handled carefully, with video embedded from a hosting service or lazy-loaded, poster images shown first and image sizes controlled, so the page stays responsive on mobile data.

Security, Privacy and Quality

The site's public surface is small, but the enquiry form still needs server-side validation and spam protection. Embedded third-party video players can set cookies and load external scripts, so we recommended a privacy-conscious embed approach and a clear cookie notice where required. Client work is kept as a draft until cleared for display. We checked contrast of text over imagery, keyboard navigation of the grid, and behaviour on slower connections.

Technology

We used WordPress with custom PHP and JavaScript. Custom templates give us the editorial layouts and grid behaviour that a stock theme would not, and allow subtle interaction without heavy libraries. WordPress lets the studio add finished projects as they are completed, so the portfolio stays current.

Outcome

Luminous Creates has a portfolio that shows what the studio does in an organised way, presents video and design work with the right atmosphere and can be updated by the team as new projects land. Hover states and transitions exist to guide the eye to the next piece of work, keeping the site elegant and respectful of the visitor's time.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a portfolio website for a creative studio cost?

Cost depends on how bespoke the design and interactions are, the number of project and service pages, how much video is hosted or embedded, and whether copywriting or photography is included. Custom editorial layouts take more design time than a template. A brief discovery call lets us give a firm figure.

How should a creative agency show video work without slowing the site?

Use poster images and load video only when the visitor chooses to play it, host files on a service built for streaming, and keep page weight in check with properly sized images. This preserves both speed and the impact of the work.

Is WordPress suitable for a design and video portfolio?

Yes. With custom templates it can present work in a distinctive way, and it lets the team publish new projects themselves. The key is avoiding heavy page builders and plugins that undermine performance.
