Overview
Meridian Health is a multi-specialty healthcare provider that needed a corporate website able to serve patients, families and referrers. We built it on WordPress with a clean, clinical visual design, a specialty structure that helps patients find the right department, and an appointment pathway that connects interest to action.
The Challenge
Patients arriving at a healthcare website are often anxious and in a hurry. They may not know which specialty they need, and they want proof the provider is qualified before they book. A provider with many departments risks presenting a maze of pages that leaves visitors more confused than when they arrived. The site had to organise a broad range of specialties in plain language, communicate credentials honestly and make booking simple.
Who Uses It and How
A patient or family member searches a symptom, lands on a department page, checks who practises there and what the service covers, then requests an appointment. Reception and administrative staff receive appointment requests and confirm a slot by phone or message. A communications team keeps doctor listings, department descriptions and announcements current through the WordPress editor.
Our Approach
We started with the patient's question, which is usually a symptom or need rather than a department name, and structured the specialty pages so patients can tell where they belong. Trust was treated as a design requirement: credentials and accreditation badges are visible, the interface is calm and uncluttered, and the language avoids unnecessary jargon. The appointment pathway is reachable from every page. WordPress lets the provider's team maintain information about doctors, departments and announcements without developer help.
What We Built
The site presents a breakdown of specialties designed for patient self-selection; each department page describes services and leads to an appointment request. Credential and accreditation badges appear where they reinforce confidence. The visual language is clean and clinical, with generous spacing, legible type and a restrained palette. An integrated appointment pathway is available from the main navigation and department pages, and the responsive layout lets patients use it comfortably from a phone.
Architecture and Data
Departments, services and practitioners are modelled as structured content types rather than free-form pages, so each department page automatically lists its related services and doctors and cross-links stay accurate when something changes. The appointment form captures the preferred department, contact details and a short reason, and sends the request to the reception team. It is an enquiry, not a diary system, so a person confirms the actual time. Clear heading hierarchy, descriptive link text and sensible alt text serve both search engines and users of assistive technology.
Security, Privacy and Quality
Even a brochure-style healthcare site can receive health-related information through a free-text box. We kept plugins minimal, validated all form input on the server, served the site over HTTPS, and advised patients on the form not to enter detailed medical history, since an enquiry form is not a clinical record. Whether health-privacy regulations such as HIPAA or GDPR apply depends on the provider's location and how requests are handled, so we designed to collect the minimum and left compliance decisions to the provider.
Technology
WordPress with PHP customisation provides structured templates for departments and services, so additions follow the same pattern and stay consistent. JavaScript supports navigation, form handling and interface details. Semantic markup and a clear page hierarchy assist accessibility and search visibility.
Outcome
Meridian Health has a corporate website that helps patients work out which specialty they need, shows the credentials behind the care and offers a clear way to request an appointment. Staff can keep department information current, and the structure can be extended with new services, practitioner profiles or patient resources as the provider grows.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a hospital or clinic website cost to build?
Cost depends on the number of departments and doctor profiles, custom design, appointment functionality, integrations with scheduling systems, accessibility work and content writing. A site that only collects appointment enquiries costs less than one connected to a booking system.
Do healthcare websites need to be HIPAA or GDPR compliant?
It depends on where you operate and what data the site handles. A site that only publishes information faces fewer obligations than one collecting patient details, but data-protection rules can still apply to enquiry forms. Ask a qualified adviser and design forms to collect as little as possible.
How should a healthcare website organise its specialties?
Around how patients think, meaning symptoms and needs as well as department names. Each specialty page should explain the services in plain language, show the doctors and lead directly to an appointment request.
